Students from Albany High's Best Buddies club welcomed the arrival of fall with an engaging hands-on learning experience, guided by City Gardener Jena DiTonno, Assistant City Gardener Sarah Cameron and their dedicated gardening crew from the Department of General Services!
In the beautiful fall sunshine, twelve students donned gardening gloves and dug into important topics such as how to properly prune, remove weeds and clean garden beds to prepare for the next planting season. We are thankful for our students’ commitment to tending our garden beds and are excited for their next project: planting tulips bulbs mid-October that will enhance our gardens in the springtime.
In addition to working in our Albany High garden beds, students will embark on a field trip to the historic Washington Park later this fall, where they will join professional gardeners in planting tulips in the formal gardens. This is a wonderful chance to gain insight on how public spaces in our city are maintained so residents and visitors can appreciate all the beauty our community has to offer! In the springtime, students will return to the formal gardens for a follow-up field trip to see the tulips in bloom.
We are incredibly grateful for this collaboration between our Albany High staff and the Department of General Services, which has given our students the opportunity to build beneficial life skills, while being introduced to potential career pathways available in the City of Albany!
